The Department of Health requires commissioners to identify three or more community or mental health services in which to implement patient choice of ‘any qualified provider’ (AQP) from April 2012.
This should be based on the priorities of emerging clinical commissioning groups and engagement with the public and professionals.
A provisional list of eight broad clinical areas where AQP could be considered was published, and a public consultation took place to find out which of these areas AQP should be extended to.
Following the consultation, Trafford suggested the following three areas: back and neck pain; adult primary care psychological therapies and adult hearing services.
In order to progress a collaborative approach to the implementation of the policy, NHS Greater Manchester considered the options suggested by all ten localities, and have decided to centrally support the procurement of diagnostics, podiatry and adult hearing.
