NHS Trafford has hit a target to provide 130,000 residents with NHS dental places, three months before deadline, meaning an extra 19,000 people have NHS dental care.
The places were secured in 2008 and have been filled in less than three years. In total, 19,006 new patients have been registered in those years and are now seen by NHS dentists across Trafford.
Dr Iain Pretty, a dentist and senior lecturer in dental public health at Manchester University, worked closely with NHS Trafford to publicise the extra places and recruit new patients. He said: “For the past four months we have been the best performing PCT in Greater Manchester and we are now one of three who have met their targets.
“We have not only met the target, but exceeded it and this is the result of some exceptionally hard work. I am very grateful for all the help and support we had, not only from within the PCT, but our local dentists, the local dental committee, and the Strategic Health Authority.”
Martin Tickle, professor of dental public health and primary care at Manchester University and NHS North West, added: “Trafford has beaten its target while at the same time producing nationally important innovations, such as a dedicated website that allows residents to search by postcode for practices nearby which are accepting patients.”
