With National Falls Awareness Week approaching (21-25 June), NHS Trafford is highlighting the role of physical activity in helping to prevent falls, and is encouraging the borough’s older residents to make the most of the services available to them.
Debra Maloney, falls lead at NHS Trafford’s Provider Services, commented: “Falls can occur because of weak muscles, poor balance and hazards in the home. It’s important to keep using the muscles to keep them strong, even though this can seem like more of a challenge as we get older. Regular exercise will not only help to strengthen muscles, it will improve balance and help to reduce the risk of injury through falls.”
NHS Trafford has set up Healthy Hips and Hearts groups across the borough, which provide free exercise for the over 55s and are suitable even for the very frail. The classes involve exercises and stretches and give people more confidence to move around, helping to keep the muscles supple.
Falls are the most common type of accident in the home, and around 30% of people over 65 fall at home.
