Healthy pregnant women urged to get the flu vaccine

Pregnant women are being encouraged to get the flu vaccine this year to protect themselves and their babies from the virus.

This year’s flu vaccine includes protection from the H1N1, or swine flu, strain of the virus. The H1N1 strain particularly affected healthy pregnant women during the swine flu pandemic, and so it is important that pregnant women take precautions to protect themselves.

Martin Samangaya, NHS Trafford’s immunisation co-ordinator, said: “Getting the flu vaccine this year will protect expectant mums and also means their babies are less likely to catch flu.

“The flu vaccine contains a dead form of the virus so it cannot give you the illness. It works by exposing your body to the features of the virus so it can make antibodies. This means you’re protected if you then encounter the virus later on,” he added.

“Getting the flu vaccine is the best way to protect yourself against flu. However, following basic hygiene will also help Make sure you wash your hands often, especially after coughing or sneezing. To avoid the spread of germs always endeavour to cough or sneeze into a tissue and throw it away immediately. If you sneeze or cough into your hands or elbow wash your hands immediately.

“Taking simple precautions like these can lessen your chance of getting flu.”

If you do feel unwell with flu or a heavy cold, drink plenty of fluids, stay warm, and rest. If symptoms persist, telephone NHS Direct for advice, visit your pharmacist, or see your GP if severe.

If you are pregnant and haven’t been invited to attend a seasonal flu vaccination clinic, please call the surgery and make an appointment.

The over 65s and people with pre-existing health conditions that could be worsened by influenza are also being invited to have this year’s seasonal flu vaccine.
