Trafford has the second lowest percentage of smokers in Greater Manchester, according to figures released today by the Association of Public Health Observatories.
The Tobacco Control Profiles detail the percentage of people who smoke in each area of the country, but also examine the health problems associated with smoking, for example, the number of deaths from stroke that were attributable to smoking. Trafford has seen a downward trend in five of the seven indicators.*
Kerry Briggs, NHS Trafford’s stop smoking lead, said: “Smoking is one of the biggest killers of our times, causing hundreds of deaths in Trafford alone each year. My team works exceptionally hard to help people stop smoking and we are very pleased with these figures, which show that the number of smokers in Trafford is the second lowest in the north west, at just over 19 per cent of adults.”**
The figures show a positive picture across the region as a whole, with some of the highest quit rates in the country and downward trends for the main smoking-related illnesses including heart disease, cancer and stroke. However, tobacco still causes more significant illness and deaths across the north west than in most other parts of the country.
“You’re much more likely to quit for good if you do it with help,” added Kerry. “NHS Trafford’s stop smoking team is specially trained to provide the best possible support whatever your circumstances. Get in touch by calling on 0300 456 2400, or e-mailing stopsmoking.trafford@nhs.net.”
