Protect yourself from viruses

Some viruses, such as flu and norovirus (also known as the winter vomiting bug), are passed on through the spread of germs.  This can be avoided by maintaining good cough and hand hygiene.

Follow the tips below to help stop the spread of germs:

  • Cover your nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing, using a tissue when possible;
  • Dispose of dirty tissues promptly and carefully;
  • Wash hands thoroughly and regularly at all times, but particularly after coughing and sneezing into them, visiting the lavatory and before eating;
  • Clean hard surfaces (e.g. door handles, computer keyboards and mouse devices, telephones and remote controls) frequently using a normal cleaning product;
  • If you have norovirus, do not handle or prepare food for other people until you have been free of symptoms for at least 48 hours.
  • Do not visit your local A&E unit, as you will risk infecting other vulnerable people. If your symptoms persist, telephone your GP surgery for advice.
