Dietitians provide a valuable service for people with diabetes in Trafford. They work in GP practices and the Diabetes Centre to provide one to one consultations or groups.
The newly diagnosed are provided with structured and quality education whilst existing people with diabetes who have specific dietary and lifestyle problems, or who have difficulties achieving good diabetes control, are supported and provided with the skills to self manage. Uniquely, dietitians are able to provide a dietetic and nutritional care plan that addresses both carbohydrate and nutritional need.
Dietitians work with the diabetes specialist nurses at the Diabetes Centre and other locations to provide education programmes for people with Type 1 & Type 2 diabetes. People with Type 1 diabetes are taught how to count carbohydrate and match their insulin doses to their daily food and activity. People with Type 2 diabetes starting on Liraglutide or other specialised treatments learn how to manage their food and treatments.
Dietitians provide a service for BMI (body mass index) 30 to 35kg/m2 with diabetes to help with weight loss and the Specialist Weight Management Service delivers the Trafford Lifestyle Programme to help people with a BMI of over 35 with diabetes.
