There are times when people cannot meet their nutritional needs with the amount they are able to eat and drink. When this happens it may lead to malnutrition and affect the individual's health and ability to recover from illness.
We are involved in developing nutrition screening called MUST (Malnutrition Universal Screening Tool) to identify individuals in hospital or community who are at risk of malnutrition. From this an appropriate nutritional support care plan is put in place for the patient.
We also assess and monitor individuals who need artificial nutrition by nasogastric tube or gastrostomy feeding directly into their gut; this is known as enteral tube feeding. We support these patients in hospital and when they are at home. People may need enteral tube feeding for many years and we provide regular visits to ensure that their nutritional needs continue to be met in a way that best suits their lifestyle.
Some acutely ill people in hospital require artificial nutrition fed directly into their blood system; this is known as parenteral feeding. The dietitians provide close monitoring and assessment for these patients as part of the hospital team.
We also work with the hospital team to optimise a patient's nutrition pre and post surgery to promote early recovery and rehabilitation.
