Help for common mental health difficulties
There are a range of therapies that can help people with mild or moderate conditions, like anxiety, panic attacks, and depression.
blueSCI
blueSCI focuses upon the role cultural involvement can play in recovering from mental health problems, therefore it offers real opportunities for social inclusion and citizenship.

- Health and exercise
- Allotment and outdoors
- One to one computer support
- Housing and accommodation advice
- Advocacy service
- Creative writing
- Music
- Complimentary therapies
Psychological Wellbeing Service
Psychological wellbeing practitioners (PWPs) aim to help people in Trafford to access talking therapies, like counselling, quickly and easily. The service supports GPs in the treatment of people with mild to moderate anxiety and/or depression. Through guided self-help, using cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), people can play an active role in aiding their own recovery. The service can offer help in numerous ways. Some of the services on offer include:
- Guided self-help
- Sleep management
- How food affects your mood
- Medication management
- Relaxation techniques
- Books on prescription
- Liaison and signposting to organisations if more long-term support is required.
Self Help Services
Self Help Services supports people who are experiencing mental-ill health and/or social exclusion. The charity currently offers:
- Self-help groups, facilitated by people who have personal experience of mental health problems.
- Manages and delivers one-to-one computerised cognitive behavioural therapy packages.
- Complementary therapies.
It is a formal partner within Trafford's Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) services.
Trafford Rape Crisis
A women-only group and help-line service which aims to provide support for women in Trafford who have experienced rape, sexual abuse or any other form of unwanted sex at any time in their lives. Children are welcome at the centre.
42nd Street
42nd Street provides support services to young people (aged 14 to 24) experiencing stress and mental health problems. The core aims are to:
- Engage with young people under stress;
- Provide interventions that promote resilience and recovery;
- Enable young people to take part in opportunities for personal development;
- Improve awareness of the mental health needs of children and young people among other professionals and the wider public.
Trafford Carers’ Centre
Trafford Carers’ Centre is a not-for-profit independent, voluntary organisation. The aims of Trafford Carers’ Centre are:
- To provide information, advice and support to all carers, former carers and those working with and for carers in and around the metropolitan borough of Trafford, aiming to improve carers' physical, psychological and social lives.
- To enable carers and former carers to have an independent voice to positively and effectively influence the development of relevant local services.
- To promote any charitable purposes for the benefit of carers, former carers and those working with and for carers in and around the metropolitan borough of Trafford and in particular the advancement of education and furtherance of health and the relief of poverty, distress and sickness.
New Way Forward
Formerly the Trafford Association for Mental Health and Trafford Users’ Group.
New Way Forward is a charity that helps people affected by mental ill health. One in four people will face a mental-health problem at some point in life, including worry, stress, fear, and depression. New Way Forward services are free of charge and people do not need to be referred by a GP or other healthcare professional. The atmosphere is friendly and welcoming.
New Way Forward hosts drop-in sessions, offers training courses, supports women’s only and men’s groups, and plans trips through service user led groups.
Sport events are also held throughout the year, planned by service users. New Way Forward runs NHS Trafford's Service User Forum as a formal reference group reporting to the Trafford LIT (Local Implementation team).
