Infection prevention and control service

The community infection control team works across Trafford in partnership with primary care services, hospital trusts, statutory and independent care agencies to prevent and reduce health care associated infections and communicable diseases.

Its aim is to monitor and investigate outbreaks of infection within the community, including Clostridium difficile, MRSA and norovirus – infections which are associated with person to person spread.

An important part of the team’s work is to be proactive and advise as to how people can prevent and control infection. It provides advice, support and education for all staff employed by NHS Trafford and Trafford Provider Services as well as for residential and nursing homes, GPs, dentists, social care teams, schools, nurseries, and the general public.

Work is done in collaboration with the consultant in communicable disease control, who is employed by the Greater Manchester Health Protection Unit (GMHPU), part of the Health Protection Agency. The team also works with the council on audit and inspection, training and education.

The key roles and responsibilities of the community infection control team are:

  • Advise on the implementation of national infection control initiatives.
  • Provide clinical advice to primary care professionals in the prevention and reduction of communicable diseases and healthcare-associated infections and communicable diseases.
  • Develop and maintain safe effective infection control policy and guidance documents.
  • Provide an infection control training programme.
  • Support the development and implementation of the infection control audit programme.
  • Provide clinical advice on the design and refurbishment of clinical premises.
  • Advise on the procurement of products.
  • Advise on the development of new services in line with national directives or local need.

You can contact the infection control lead on 0161 975 4710 / 4711 / 4714.
