Occupational therapy

Orthopaedic occupational therapy and hand occupational therapy

The team sees people before they come in to hospital for hip and knee replacements, to make sure they will manage safely when they go home after their operations. It sees people on the orthopaedic ward who have had a traumatic injury, eg broken hip, to enable them to improve their independence and return home safely.

Outpatients who have injured or who have had surgery to their hands are also seen by the team, to improve function and quality of life.

The team will go to the person’s home and assess their in their own environment to make sure they will manage safely when they come out of hospital. It can provide equipment and advice to solve difficulties in activities of daily living; we can also refer on to other agencies to provide assistance.

Rheumatology occupational therapy

The team sees people who have arthritis or inflammatory conditions and help them cope with the activities they need and want to do during their daily lives.

They see people as outpatients, where their ability to carry out different activities including personal, domestic, work and leisure activities and hand function is assessed. Where there are difficulties, the team will look at providing advice about coping strategies, joint protection and energy conservation, equipment and splints. They will visit people’s homes to assess for and install equipment and give advice as necessary.
