Pulmonary rehabilitation

The team provides a programme of supervised exercise and education for people with chronic pulmonary obstructive disorder (COPD), and other related lung conditions, who have shortness of breath, limiting their ability to perform activities of daily living.

The aim of the programme is to improve patients' understanding and self management of the condition, to improve quality of life and reduce the need to hospitalisation.

The programme is run over an eight-week period at three venues across Trafford. Patients attend the classes twice a week with up to 12 people in each class. Weekly education sessions are given on the following topics:

  • What is COPD
  • Exercise
  • Dealing with exacerbations
  • Smoking cessation
  • Medication
  • Nutrition and anxiety management.

Referrals are received from the respiratory consultants, GPs, practice nurses and from ward therapists.
